About reading and language development

Language helps us think, communicate and learn. Through language we can express feelings and thoughts, take part in and understand how others think and feel and develop our identity. A rich and varied language is also important to be able to take part in information and be an active citizen of society.

Reading benefits language development. A good reading comprehension gives greater opportunities to develop good knowledge in all subjects. Reading is also a fantastic way to experience new worlds, open up the imagination and create an understanding of how other people feel.

By reading to and together with your child, you give them opportunities and conditions to develop a rich vocabulary, a varied language and a good reading comprehension. These are skills that will help your child for the rest of his life.

How can it be done?

Try to make reading a cozy moment. Choose a book you like - the child will notice and then the probability is greater that you will succeed in capturing the child. Before you start reading, you can create curiosity by looking at the front cover and at the pictures in the book. For example, you can ask questions such as; What do you think the book is called? What does the front look like? What do you think the book will be about? What do you see in the pictures? Do you recognize anything?

During the reading, you can take breaks where you and the child have the opportunity to ask questions about the text, new words or the pictures. After reading, you can talk about what the book told. Could the child recognize himself in any of what was told?
